Discipleship Development at GSLC

As my calling at Good Shepherd has changed from being the “Lead Pastor of the Northwood” campus to, “Pastor of Adult Education and Discipleship”, one of the areas we are adding is what we will call “Discipleship Development”.  When Jesus called the first disciples with the simple words “follow me”, they embarked on a life changing journey with Jesus that lasted 3 years.  At the end of their time with Jesus, after he went to the cross and then rose again, Jesus charged with them the Great Commission. He said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit; and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded.  And, I will be with you until the end of the age.”  Matthew 28:19-20

The Great Commission has always been at the forefront of our mission and purpose at GSLC and our vision statement to Know, Grow and Show God’s love is a way of applying the Great Commission in our context today.  And yet the question remains, are we making disciples that make disciples that make disciples?  It this is a natural outcome of our ministry here at GSLC?  This is a challenging question because most people are comfortable coming to church and even getting involved in the many great programs GSLC offers.  Yet, the question remains are we making disciples who make disciples?  That is the purpose discipleship development.

To that end the leaders are starting some groups called “huddles” that will begin an intentional process of equipping some people to make disciples who will make disciples.  Creating a culture where this is the natural outcome is not going to happen overnight be I am excited as we begin this process knowing that He will be with us as we seek to be faithful to our call as a church fulfill the Great Commission.   You will also notice our new Adult Education classes on Sunday mornings at 9:30 am, and beginning in October on Wednesday nights we will be offering Adult Education starting with the Alpha Express Class, Wednesday October 5th at 6:30 (Dinner Provided!)
